January 2026 Poverty Awareness Month

The end of January marks the end of Poverty Awareness Month. To recognize this month, our team participated in group learning and discussions that will continue into February, along with our ongoing work of community outreach and high quality legal services to communities most impacted by poverty.

86% of the clients that we have served in the last 5 years have a total household income of less than $35,000 a year. As an organization, we understand that poverty impacts every facet of life, including every area of law that we serve in. We recognize that poverty impacts individuals, families, and communities in many different ways, and extends to their quality of life, social determinants of health, and even life span.

LawNY is committed to growing and improving ourselves and our services so that the work we do is more accessible and aligned with what our client communities need most. We know there is still much work to do, and we believe our mission as an organization is only realized when we acknowledge and respond to the full and complex ways poverty affects each individual, family, and community we serve.
